The name

Skandamata means “mother of Skanda” [1][2]. Skanda, also called Kartikeya, Kumara or Murugan, is the son of Shiva and Parvati and a war god [2]. The Swarajya study adds a deeper reading. The Chandogya Upanishad (7.25.2) calls the sage Sanatkumara “Skanda”, so the Pradipa commentary takes her name to mean mother of enlightened beings such as Sanatkumara [1]. It also points to the Lalita Sahasranama name viramata, “mother of the brave hero” (836) [1].

Place in the Navadurga

She is fifth in the Devi Kavacha list (verses 3–5) and is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri [1][2]. After Kushmanda’s cosmic scale, the sequence returns to family life: Parvati as a mother. Writers who read the nine forms as stages describe this as Durga’s stage of motherhood [5].

Stories and sources

The Devi Kavacha supplies only the name [1]. The story of Skanda’s birth is Puranic, told most fully in the Shiva Purana, though versions differ across texts [2]. Calling Parvati in this nurturing role “Skandamata” is how the Navadurga tradition frames that story.

In the version summarised from the Shiva Purana tradition, the demon Taraka was terrorising the gods, who could be saved only by a son of Shiva. A delegation of gods led by Vishnu and Brahma came to Kailasa. In the disturbance Shiva’s seed fell. Agni, the fire god, carried it, and it passed through the bathing waters of the sages’ wives and the river Ganga to a thicket of reeds, where a radiant child appeared [2]. Parvati, angry at the intrusion, cursed the gods’ wives. Yet she took the child as her own and nursed him. Devotional tradition calls this nurturing aspect Skandamata [2]. She gave her son the divine spear (shakti), and he was destined to defeat Taraka [2].

The details (how many mothers, which river, which god carried the seed) vary between Puranic versions. Read this as one telling among several.

Why devotees worship her

Devotees pray to Skandamata as a loving mother who protects her children. Many families pray to her for the well-being of children, and some for the blessing of children. Since she holds Skanda, worship of her is often said to honour both mother and son together. These are beliefs of devotees, expressed differently from place to place.

Symbolic qualities

Her image joins power and tenderness. She rides a lion and is mother of the army of the gods, yet she sits calmly with a baby on her lap. Lotuses suggest purity and calm. Seated on a lotus, she is also called Padmasana [2]. A common reading is that her strength exists to shelter others. Visitors may notice how differently she is drawn from Chandraghanta, though both are understood as the same Goddess.

Iconography

She is shown with four arms and three eyes, fair in complexion [2]. One hand holds the infant Skanda, often shown six-headed, on her lap [5]. Two hands hold lotuses, and one shows the abhaya gesture [2][5]. She rides a lion and is often seated on a lotus [2]. Her prayer verse, quoted above, describes her as “ever seated on a lion” with lotuses in two hands [3][4].

The day

The fifth day falls on the fifth lunar day (panchami) of the bright half of Ashvin [6]. Her worship also recurs in Chaitra Navratri in spring; the Prime Minister’s Office published this same verse on 23 March 2026 [4]. “Colour of the day” lists vary by region and year. Our sky blue is a site design choice, not a religious rule.

Puja and offerings

Examples only. Practice varies by community.

  • Recitation: her prayer verse or Om Devi Skandamatayai Namah [2], with the Durga Saptashati in many homes [1].
  • Offerings: popular articles name various fruits or sweets for this day. We found no single agreed offering, so we list none as standard.
  • Regional frames: in Tamil Nadu, Skanda (Murugan) is a major deity in his own right, and Navratri there is often marked by golu displays rather than a strict Navadurga cycle. Gujarat has Garba, and Bengal’s main Durga Puja days come later [6]. Not every community follows the nine-form order.

What her story teaches

Skandamata shows how the Navadurga sequence weaves the Goddess’s family into the festival. For visitors, she is a bridge between two of India’s great devotional worlds: the Goddess of the North and Centre, and Skanda-Murugan, beloved in the South. Her story also shows how traditions overlap: one Puranic birth story, many regional versions, and a single devotional image, mother and child on a lion.
