The name
Chandraghanta combines chandra, “moon”, and ghanta, “bell” [1]. The compound can be read in two ways: “she whose bell has the moon”, or “she whose bell is lovely like the moon” [1]. Pictures resolve it visually: she wears a half-moon on her forehead shaped like a bell [2][3]. The Pradipa commentary offers a third reading, that she “answers” or outshines the moon in beauty. The Lalita Sahasranama has a similar name, chandranibha, “moon-like” [1].
Place in the Navadurga
She is third in the Devi Kavacha list of nine names (verses 3–5) and is worshipped on the third day of Navratri [1][2]. After the newborn Shailaputri and the ascetic Brahmacharini, she is the first warrior form in the sequence. Here the Goddess appears armed, and some writers describe her as Durga in the form of Shakti, active power [4].
Stories and sources
The Devi Kavacha gives the name only [1]. Stories about Chandraghanta come from devotional tradition, and we could not tie them to a specific Puranic chapter, so treat them as popular accounts.
The wedding. In one telling, Shiva arrives for his wedding to Parvati with a wild appearance and a crowd of ghosts and ascetics. Her family is terrified. Parvati takes the fierce form of Chandraghanta to steady the situation and protect her family’s honour. Then, calmed, she asks Shiva to take a gentler, handsome form, and the wedding goes ahead [2].
The half-moon. Another account simply says that after her marriage Parvati began to wear the half-moon on her forehead, and so was called Chandraghanta [3].
Jatukasura. A modern retelling describes a demon whose army of giant bats spread darkness. The sound of her bell and the roar of her lion scattered them, and she killed the demon with her trident [2].
The wedding story has roots in the wider Shiva Purana tradition of Shiva’s strange wedding procession. The Chandraghanta framing, though, seems to be a devotional development.
Why devotees worship her
Devotees believe she grants courage and fearlessness, and she is prayed to for protection [2]. The sound of her bell is said to drive away harmful forces. Some yogic traditions place her at the Manipura chakra, near the navel [2]. Devotional calendars link her with Venus (Shukra) [3]. As with all such links, these are beliefs of particular traditions.
Symbolic qualities
Chandraghanta brings opposites together. She is armed and fierce, yet one hand makes the abhaya gesture, “do not fear” [2]. The moon suggests calm and coolness. The bell suggests alertness and a sound that clears the air. A common devotional reading is that fierceness exists here to protect: the warrior and the mother are the same person. In temple practice the bell is also the familiar sound that opens worship, which makes it an easy symbol for visitors to recognise.
Iconography
She is shown with ten arms and a golden complexion, a third eye, and the bell-shaped half-moon on her forehead [2]. The commonly listed objects are a trident, mace, bow and arrow, sword, lotus, bell and water pot, with one hand in abhaya mudra [2]. The lists vary between sources. Her mount is a lion in some accounts and a tiger or tigress in others [2][3][4]. Her prayer verse describes her as riding the “foremost of beasts” and bearing fierce weapons, which leaves the animal open [3].
The day
The third day falls on the third lunar day (tritiya) of the bright half of Ashvin [5]. Popular “colour of the day” lists differ by region and year. Our terracotta is a site design choice, not a religious prescription.
Puja and offerings
Treat these as examples. Practice varies by community.
Bell and sound: given her name, many devotees give the temple or home bell a special place in the day’s worship. This is a natural emphasis rather than a prescribed rule.
Recitation: her prayer verse or Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah [2][3], often alongside the Durga Saptashati [1].
Flowers and food: one devotional calendar names jasmine [3]. Food offerings (bhog) vary by household. Popular articles often name a particular sweet for this day, but we found no agreement between them, and no single offering is universal.
Regional frames: Garba evenings in Gujarat, golu displays in many southern homes, and in Bengal the main Durga Puja days come later [5]. Not every tradition worships a separate form each day.
What her story teaches
Chandraghanta shows how one goddess can be both frightening and kind, and how a single image, the moon shaped as a bell, can carry a name. For visitors, her ten-armed figure is a good place to learn to “read” Hindu images: count the hands, name the objects, and look for the one hand that blesses. Her stories also show tradition at work. Old themes such as Shiva’s wedding procession are reshaped into new tales for a particular day of worship.
