Why go

Bhedaghat packs a river gorge, a waterfall and a hilltop temple into a few kilometres, so it works well as a day out from Jabalpur. This page puts the three together. Each has its own page with details and sources: Marble Rocks boat ride, Dhuandhar Falls visit and Chausath Yogini visit. Where the plan below is our own judgement, it is marked as editorial advice.

Getting there from Jabalpur

Outlook Traveller gives 25 km or about 45 minutes by road [1]. Wikipedia says about 20 km and that an auto or cab can easily be hired from the city [4]. Holidify reports state buses and shared autorickshaws from Jabalpur [8], but its own figures are inconsistent, so we do not repeat its fare or distance. A cab for the whole day lets you move between the three stops without waiting; whether that is worth the cost is your call.

What the stops offer

  • Temple. A flight of steps, reported as 108 or more than 150, leads up to a ring of carved goddesses and a view over the Narmada. A blog lists hours of 8:00 to 18:00; ASI lists none [3][9].
  • Falls and ropeway. The Narmada drops into the gorge, and a ropeway crosses above it. The ropeway is reported to run from about 10:30, with a lunch break from 1:30 to 2:00, and to close in the monsoon [1][6].
  • Boat ride. About 45 minutes to an hour through the marble channel [2][3]. The cliffs were seen turning pink and pale gold before sunset [2].

The falls are about five minutes’ drive from the Marble Rocks [1], and a blog puts the temple about 1.5 km on foot from the falls [3].

A suggested day (editorial advice, October to March)

This order follows the reported hours, not an official timetable. Change it if the actual times differ.

  1. About 9:00, temple. Climb while it is cool and the site is reported to be quiet [3]. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.
  2. About 10:30, falls and ropeway. The ropeway is reported to open around then [1][3]. Walk the path to the river and take the ride across.
  3. Around 12:30 to 14:00, lunch and rest. The ropeway breaks at 1:30 [1][6], so this is a natural pause. A blog suggests lunch at a resort or hotel near the falls if you arrive by noon, without naming one [3]. We do not list restaurants.
  4. From about 15:00, boat ride. Ask for the last boat on arrival. If it is 5 pm, a 3 pm start leaves margin; the light is softer than at noon and the cliffs may take on colour [2][3].
  5. Evening. Head back to Jabalpur. On a full-moon night, boats from Panchvati ghat are reported to run to midnight, so a later return is possible if you plan for it [7].

Seasons

Winter, October to March. Incredible India describes calmer water, better boating and comfortable weather for the viewpoints and cable car [5]. Boating is reported to start around 15 October [1][3]. This is the easiest time for the full plan above.

Summer. A blog warns that daytime temperatures are high [3]. Editorial advice: skip the noon hours. Keep the temple for early morning, take your break at midday, and do the boat late in the day. The boat ride itself is reported to run to about 7 pm, which gives room [7].

Monsoon, July to September. Incredible India says the falls are most dramatic then, but boat rides may pause for safety [5]. Outlook Traveller reported the ropeway closed [1]. Editorial advice: make it a falls-and-temple day, expect wet and slippery steps and paths, and do not count on the boat or ropeway until confirmed locally. If you want to be sure of both the water and the boat, early to mid October may suit, but confirm.

What to skip

  • In the heat: the middle-of-the-day climb, and long waits in the open for a boat.
  • In the monsoon: planning around the boat ride or the ropeway.
  • If short of time: the temple is the stop that can be dropped without losing the river and falls; it is also the only one with a significant climb. If you do skip it, our history page, Chausath Yogini Temple, has the story.

Good to know

  • Fares: reported shared-boat fares ranged from 50 to 100 per person and ropeway fares from 55 to 95, across sources of different years. Budget with margin and ask first.
  • Faith sites and rivers: dress modestly at the temple, and keep plastic out of the Narmada.
  • For the geology behind the gorge, read Bhedaghat Marble Rocks.

  • Start early and do the temple climb before the day heats up (editorial advice).
  • Plan lunch around the ropeway break. Two sources report it closed from 1:30 to 2:00 pm [1][6].
  • Ask for the last boat time when you arrive. Sources say 5 pm and 7 pm [3][7].
  • Carry water, sunscreen, a hat, and an umbrella in the rains [3].
  • Carry cash for boats and the ropeway in case cards or UPI are not accepted at counters (common-sense tip; not confirmed).

  • All times and fares (see the three place pages). A day plan stands or falls on the last boat time and the ropeway hours.
  • Road distance and bus or shared-auto details from Jabalpur: 14 to 33 km are printed; Holidify gives a fare of about 25 to 30 but its page contradicts itself. Confirm bus stand, frequency and fare.
  • Whether the temple, falls and boat ghat can each be reached on foot from one another, or need a vehicle. Only the temple to falls distance (about 1.5 km, blog) is stated.
