Overview

On a hill above the Narmada at Bhedaghat stands one of India’s most important yogini temples. Instead of a tower, it is a ring of cells open to the sky, each originally holding a carved goddess - the yoginis, fierce female deities of tantric worship [1][3]. Popularly called Chausath Yogini (“sixty-four yoginis”), it is a monument cared for by the Archaeological Survey of India’s Jabalpur Circle [1], and it is one of the best-preserved works of the Kalachuri dynasty of Tripuri.

Timeline / Key moments

  • c. 2nd century CE - A Kushana-period sculpture on the site, and c. 8th century red sandstone images, suggest earlier shrines here [1].
  • Early 11th century - The circular yogini temple is built, commonly attributed to Yuvaraja II of the Kalachuris of Tripuri [3]. Other dates have been proposed.
  • 1155 CE - A shrine is built in the courtyard, converting the complex into a Gauri-Shankar temple; the central deities are moved [3]. ASI lists the Gauri-Shankar temple and circular colonnade as a separate entry [2].

People and events

The Kalachuris (also spelled Kalachuris of Chedi or of Tripuri) ruled from Tripuri, not far from the temple (see Tripuri and the Kalachuris). The art historian Vidya Dehejia made the standard study of the site in 1986, describing it as a temple of eighty-one yoginis [4][3]; the religious historian David Gordon White called it the Kalachuris’ largest building project [3].

Why it matters

An unusual number. Most yogini temples are built for 64 goddesses. Bhedaghat has more cells: Dehejia counts 81, while the ASI describes 84 cells holding 84 sculptures, of which 64 are yoginis and the rest other deities such as Ganesha, Bhairava and Hanuman [1][3]. Scholars connect the 81-yogini scheme with royal patronage.

Named goddesses. Each slab has a name label cut at its base [3]. ASI notes that most of these names differ from those in Sanskrit texts [1] - valuable evidence of how the cult was practised locally. Among the figures are older Matrikas (mother goddesses) such as Varahi, Brahmani, Maheshvari, Indrani and Vaishnavi [3].

A layered site. The Kushana and 8th-century pieces show that the hill was sacred long before the ring was built, and the 1155 Gauri-Shankar shrine shows how later generations adapted it [1][3].

What survives today

The circular cloister with its sculptures, and the Gauri-Shankar shrine in the courtyard [1][2]. ASI describes the wall as built of sandstone and granite [1].

Visiting

Climb the steps from Bhedaghat; combine with the Marble Rocks and Dhuandhar Falls. Please respect any worshippers and do not touch the sculptures.

Myths and documented history

  • “Exactly 64.” Disputed - the name is traditional; the counts are 81 or 84 cells [1][3].
  • Builder and date. Attribution to Yuvaraja II and an early-11th-century date are the common scholarly view, not an inscription-proven fact as far as checked here [3].
  • Tantric secrets. Scholars link yogini worship to tantric texts; stories of secret rites at this temple are folklore.
  • Damage. Popular accounts blame a specific invader for damage to the sculptures; no source consulted documents this.
