Why go
The boat ride is the part of Bhedaghat that people remember. For a short stretch the Narmada runs through a narrow channel between high white cliffs, and from a small boat you look up at them from water level. What you will see
Boats go downstream of the falls into the marble channel, and the boatman usually acts as guide [5]. One travel writer who made the trip in 2017 took about 45 minutes, and wrote that the oars and the guides’ talk were the only sounds on the river. Her boatman pointed out Shivling Point, a rock shaped like a shivalinga, and she began to see faces and animals in the cliffs herself [3]. This kind of naming of shapes is part of the ride, so expect stories rather than a lecture.
The stone itself is mostly white, with some blue and brown bands [5][6]. Light changes how it looks. The same writer saw the cliffs turn pink and pale gold in the hour before sunset, and put their height at about 100 feet, which is her estimate and not a surveyed figure [3]. A 2024 article says the rocks shimmer in sunlight and look silver by moonlight [4].
Best time
Season. Sources disagree on dates, so treat them as a guide. Outlook Traveller reported boating from 15 October to 15 June, possibly earlier if the monsoon recedes [2]. A travel blog says boating starts after the monsoon, from 15 October, and runs to April [1]. When the river is high in the monsoon, boating is reported to be suspended. Check locally before you travel in September or October.
Time of day. A blog lists boating hours of 10:00 to 17:00 [1]. A 2024 article says rides normally end at 7 pm [4]. These do not match, so ask for the last boat on the day. Editorial advice: late afternoon should give softer light and cooler air than noon in summer, but it is cutting close if the last boat is early.
Full moon. Boating on full-moon nights is popular. According to the 2024 article, boats from Panchvati ghat run until midnight on Purnima nights instead of stopping at 7 pm [4].
Sharad Purnima
Wikipedia, citing a Times of India piece on Kojagari Puja, says Purnima is considered the best time for boating, especially on Sharad Purnima, and that the ride is believed to heal body and soul. It adds that Kartik Purnima is also sacred for bathing and boating (the page gives no source for the Kartik claim) [5]. IANS Life repeats the belief that the moon showers amrit on the Narmada and mentions the Narmada Mahotsav [6].
This is a tradition, not a documented fact. It is a good reason to come, but expect big crowds, and ask locally whether night boats are running that year.
Fares and timings
No official fare list or notice was found. What has been printed:
- Shared boat: 100 per person in a blog updated in 2023 [1]; 50 per person in Outlook Traveller in 2017 [2].
- Private boat for five: from 400 in 2017 [2].
- Ride length: about 1 hour [1]; about 45 minutes [3].
Fares go up and down with season and demand. Use these only as a rough guide and agree the price before you sit down.
Getting there
Bhedaghat is on the western side of Jabalpur. Distances printed in different sources range from 14 to 33 km, and Outlook Traveller gives 25 km or about 45 minutes by road [2]. मौसम। स्रोतों में तारीख़ें अलग हैं, इसलिए इन्हें अंदाज़े की तरह लें। आउटलुक ट्रैवलर ने नौका सैर 15 अक्टूबर से 15 जून तक बताई थी, और मानसून जल्दी लौटे तो पहले भी शुरू हो सकती है [2]। एक यात्रा-ब्लॉग कहता है कि सैर मानसून के बाद 15 अक्टूबर से शुरू होकर अप्रैल तक चलती है [1]। मानसून में नदी चढ़ी हो तो नौका सैर बंद रहने की सूचना है। सितंबर या अक्टूबर में जाने से पहले स्थानीय रूप से पता कर लें।
दिन का समय। एक ब्लॉग में नौका सैर का समय सुबह 10 से शाम 5 बजे बताया गया है [1]। 2024 के एक लेख के अनुसार सैर आम तौर पर शाम 7 बजे तक चलती है [4]। दोनों मेल नहीं खाते, इसलिए उसी दिन आखिरी नाव का समय पूछ लें। संपादकीय सुझाव: गर्मियों में दोपहर के मुक़ाबले शाम की रोशनी नरम और हवा ठंडी होनी चाहिए, पर आखिरी नाव जल्दी हो तो समय कम पड़ सकता है।
पूर्णिमा। पूर्णिमा की रातों में नौका सैर लोकप्रिय है। 2024 के लेख के अनुसार पंचवटी घाट से नावें पूर्णिमा की रात शाम 7 बजे रुकने के बजाय आधी रात तक चलती हैं [4]।
शरद पूर्णिमा
विकिपीडिया, कोजागरी पूजा पर टाइम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया के एक लेख का हवाला देकर, कहता है कि पूर्णिमा को नौका सैर के लिए सबसे अच्छा माना जाता है, ख़ासकर शरद पूर्णिमा को, और मान्यता है कि इससे तन और मन का उपचार होता है। वह यह भी जोड़ता है कि कार्तिक पूर्णिमा पर भी स्नान और नौका सैर पवित्र मानी जाती है (इस दावे का स्रोत पृष्ठ पर नहीं दिया गया) [5]। आईएएनएस लाइफ़ भी यही मान्यता दोहराता है कि चंद्रमा नर्मदा पर अमृत बरसाता है, और नर्मदा महोत्सव का ज़िक्र करता है [6]।
यह परंपरा है, प्रलेखित तथ्य नहीं। आने का यह अच्छा कारण है, पर भारी भीड़ की उम्मीद रखें, और स्थानीय रूप से पूछ लें कि उस साल रात की नावें चल रही हैं या नहीं।
