The name

Katyayani is usually read as “she who belongs to Katya” - the family of the sage Katyayana [3]. Reference works and devotional writers explain the name in more than one way: some say the sage worshipped her first, others that she was born, or took form, in his hermitage [3][4]. These are traditional explanations, not settled etymology [2].

Place in the Navadurga

The nine forms worshipped across Navratri come from a short hymn, the Devi Kavacham (“armour of the Goddess”). In verses 3–5, Brahma tells the sage Markandeya the nine names, and the sixth is “Katyayani” [1]. The Kavacham is traditionally recited before the Durga Saptashati (the Devi Mahatmya of the Markandeya Purana), but scholars note it is an auxiliary hymn, not part of the 700-verse text itself [2]. Katyayani follows Skandamata (day 5) and comes before Kalaratri (day 7).

Stories and sources

Different texts tell her story differently, so it helps to keep them apart:

  • Vedic mention. Reference works point to the Taittiriya Aranyaka (Yajurveda) as the earliest place the name appears [3]. We have not checked the original passage.
  • Puranic origin stories. In the version summarised from the Vamana Purana, the combined radiance of the gods takes form in sage Katyayana’s hermitage, the gods arm her, and she defeats the buffalo-demon Mahishasura. The Kalika Purana says the sage worshipped her first [3].
  • Devotional retelling. Modern devotional writing joins these threads: Katyayana does penance asking the Goddess to be born as his daughter; because Mahisha could only be killed by a woman, she fights and slays him, and is identified with Mahishasuramardini [4]. The gifts of weapons are drawn from the Devi Mahatmya’s account of the gods arming the Goddess [4].
  • The gopis’ vow. The Bhagavata Purana (10.22) describes the unmarried gopis of Vraja worshipping Katyayani for a month and praying, “make the son of Nanda my husband” [5]. This is the root of the Katyayani vrata still kept by some women hoping for a good marriage [3].

Why devotees worship her

Devotees see Katyayani as the Goddess ready for battle - the moment the gentle mother becomes the warrior [4]. Many pray to her to remove obstacles, and especially for marriage, following the gopis’ example [4][5].

Symbolic qualities

These are interpretations, not historical claims. Writers link her with courage, resolve and righteous anger; some yoga traditions connect her with the ajna (brow) chakra, the seat of insight [3][4].

Iconography

She is usually shown with four arms, riding a lion. One hand holds a sword, another a lotus; the other two show abhaya (fear not) and varada (boon-giving) gestures [3][4]. Her complexion is often described as golden [4]. Details vary between images and regions.

The day

Katyayani is worshipped on shashthi, the sixth day of Navratri [4]. In Bengal’s Durga Puja, Shashthi is also when the main festival days begin - a reminder that the “day of” a form is shared with other local calendars. Popular “colour of the day” lists usually give red for this day, but such lists differ [6]; this site’s sindoor red is our own editorial choice.

Puja and offerings

Home worship generally follows the pattern of the other days: lamp, incense, flowers, recitation and naivedya (food offering). Devotional sites suggest specific flowers, foods and colours for Katyayani, but these differ from source to source - one, for example, names marigold and green [4], while others favour red. Follow your own family or temple practice.

What her story teaches

Read symbolically, Katyayani’s story says that protection is collective: the gods’ separate powers achieve nothing alone, but together they produce a force that can face injustice. The gopis’ story adds a gentler lesson - steady, simple devotion over a long time.
