Overview

Two forces turned Jabalpur from a regional market town into an industrial city: the railway and the army. The East Indian Railway reached the city in 1867 [1]. The British had made Jabalpur a cantonment [7], and from 1904 onward a chain of defence factories followed: the Gun Carriage Factory, Ordnance Factory Khamaria in 1942, and later the Vehicle Factory [3][4][5]. In 2003 the city became headquarters of a new railway zone [2].

Key moments

  • 1818: The British take control of the Jabalpur area after the defeat of the Bhonsles [6].
  • 1861: The Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, including Jabalpur, become part of the Central Provinces [6].
  • 1867: The Naini–Jabalpur line of the East Indian Railway opens, linking the city by rail [1].
  • 1870: Viceroy Lord Mayo inaugurates Jabalpur station [1].
  • 1904: The Gun Carriage Factory is established [3].
  • 1942: Ordnance Factory Khamaria is established [5].
  • 1959: Vehicle production begins inside the Gun Carriage Factory [4].
  • 1969: The Vehicle Factory moves to its own site [4].
  • 3 April 2003: The West Central Railway zone comes into being with its headquarters at Jabalpur [2].

People and events

The railway. When the line from Naini, across the Yamuna from Allahabad, reached Jabalpur in 1867, the city joined the growing Indian rail network. Lord Mayo opened the station in 1870 [1]. Once the line from Howrah through Allahabad to Bombay was complete, Jabalpur sat on a main route between north, east and west India [1].

Guns and vehicles. The Gun Carriage Factory, founded in 1904, made carriages for artillery and today produces guns such as the Dhanush howitzer and the Sharang towed gun [3]. Vehicle manufacture began inside it in 1959 and moved to a separate Vehicle Factory in 1969. That factory built the Shaktiman truck and the Jonga, both once familiar in the Indian Army, and now builds Stallion trucks and mine-protected vehicles [4].

Khamaria. Ordnance Factory Khamaria, east of the city, was set up in 1942, during the Second World War [5]. Ammunition work carries risk: a fire and explosions at the factory in March 2017 were widely reported [5].

The zone. West Central Railway was formed in 2003 out of divisions taken from Central and Western Railways - Jabalpur, Bhopal and Kota - with its head office in Jabalpur [2].

Why it matters

These institutions shaped the city’s neighbourhoods, its migration and its economy. Factory estates and railway colonies brought workers from across India, and defence work gave Jabalpur steady employment through the twentieth century [3][4][5][7].

What survives today

All four are active: Jabalpur Junction, the West Central Railway headquarters, the Gun Carriage Factory, the Vehicle Factory and the Khamaria ordnance estate [1][2][3][4][5][7].

Visiting

The railway station is open to the public. Defence factories are restricted areas; photography near them may be prohibited.

Myths and documented history

Documented: the 1867 line, the 1870 inauguration, and the founding dates of the factories and the zone [1]–[5].

Unconfirmed here: the often-repeated statement that Jabalpur was where the Bombay and Calcutta lines met in 1870.
