Overview
Jabalpur’s reputation as a city of colleges goes back more than 150 years. A government school founded at Sagar in 1836 moved to Jabalpur in 1873 and grew into Robertson College, today’s Government Model Science College [1]. Local citizens founded the Hitkarini Sabha in 1868 [4]. An engineering college opened in 1947 and a university in 1956 [2][3]. Together these made Jabalpur the educational centre of the Mahakoshal region.

People and events
The travelling college. The science college’s own history tells how, in 1873, staff and students moved the institution from Sagar to Jabalpur by bullock-cart over about a week. G. Thompson was principal of the new Jabalpur Government College in 1873–74 [1]. In 1916 it took the name of Benjamin Robertson and moved into a new building [1].
The engineering college. On 7 July 1947, the Central Provinces education minister S. V. Gokhale inaugurated the Government Engineering College, Jabalpur. Its first principal, S. P. Chakravarti, came from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. It started in the Robertson College building, which still houses its civil engineering department [3]. It became autonomous in 1997 [3].
The university. The University of Jabalpur was created by the Jabalpur University Act of 1956. In 1983 it was renamed after Rani Durgavati [2]. One of its early philosophy lecturers was Rajneesh, later Osho (see that article).
Why it matters
Colleges brought teachers, students and printing to Jabalpur, and with them the writers, lawyers and activists who shaped the city in the twentieth century. The same buildings link colonial, nationalist and modern Jabalpur: the 1916 Robertson block is still in use by the engineering college [1][3].
What survives today
The Government Model Science College at Pachpedi holds UGC heritage status grants (2015) [1]. The 1916 Robertson College building stands on the engineering college campus [3]. RDVV, JEC and IIITDM are all active [2][3][4].
