Overview
Before he was Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, and long before he was Osho, Chandra Mohan Jain was a philosophy student and then a teacher in Jabalpur. He spent about fifteen years in the city, from 1951 to 1966 [1]. This article sets out those years from the published record, without judging his later movement.
Key moments
- 1951: Enrols at Hitkarini College, Jabalpur, aged 19; later asked to leave after clashes with an instructor [1].
- 21 March 1953: By his own account, has a decisive spiritual experience while sitting under a tree in the Bhanvartal garden [1].
- 1955: BA in philosophy from D. N. Jain College, Jabalpur [1].
- 1957: MA in philosophy from the University of Saugar [1].
- After 1957: Teaches at Raipur Sanskrit College; the vice-chancellor soon asks him to seek a transfer [1].
- 1958: Joins the University of Jabalpur as a lecturer in philosophy [1].
- 1966: Resigns from the university [1].
People and events
The student. At Hitkarini College the young Rajneesh argued with teachers and was asked to leave. He moved to D. N. Jain College and completed his degree there [1].
Bhanvartal. The best-known Jabalpur story about him is set in the Bhanvartal garden, now also the setting of the Rani Durgavati Museum [4]. Rajneesh later said that on 21 March 1953 he became enlightened while sitting under a tree there [1]. Followers identify the tree as a maulshree. In 2024, saplings grown from it were planted at Osho Mahakaushal College [2]. The date and place are his own testimony; they are part of his biography, not an independently checked event.
The lecturer. At the University of Jabalpur, founded in 1956 and renamed Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya in 1983 [3], he taught philosophy from 1958 [1]. During these years he also travelled widely, giving lectures that criticised orthodox religion and politics. He resigned in 1966 to teach full time [1].
Why it matters
Jabalpur is where Rajneesh’s ideas were formed and first spoken in public. For his followers, the city is a place of pilgrimage. For historians of religion, it is the starting point of one of the twentieth century’s most debated spiritual movements [1].
What survives today
The Bhanvartal garden is open to the public [4]. Osho Mahakaushal College keeps a chair he used in the library and has planted saplings from the Bhanvartal tree [2].
Visiting
The Bhanvartal garden lies around the Rani Durgavati Museum [4]. No official visitor information was found.
