Why go

Lamheta Ghat is not a ghat for a dip or an aarti. It matters because geologists named a rock formation after it. Wikipedia’s list of Jabalpur attractions says the area’s rock formation is “very well known among the geologists” and that the site is on UNESCO’s tentative list [8]. If you like landscapes with a long story, this stretch of the Narmada is worth reading about before you go, even if what you see is a riverbank and exposed rock rather than a museum.

What you will see

The honest answer is that no source we opened describes a visitor experience at the ghat itself. What is documented is what the place is.

The Lameta Formation is a layer of sandstone and limestone [1]. It is of Late Cretaceous age (Maastrichtian) and lies beneath the Deccan Traps lava [1][2]. Its type locality, the place that defines it, is Lametaghat at Jabalpur [1][2]. The Geological Survey of India’s lexicon credits H. B. Medlicott with naming it in 1872 [1]. A local newspaper article on Jabalpur’s geo-heritage repeats that the “Lameta Beds” take their name from the ghat [5].

The formation is known for fossils. Collecting began in 1828, when W. H. Sleeman found the tail bones of a long-necked dinosaur near Jabalpur [3]. Later work, especially by Charles Matley in 1917 to 1919 and 1932 to 1933, found rich deposits at Bara Simla and Chhota Simla in the Jabalpur area [3]. Fossils reported from the formation include the sauropod Titanosaurus and the meat-eater Indosuchus [2]. India’s UNESCO listing also mentions fossilised crocodile nests as a rare feature [4].

Getting there

India’s UNESCO tentative-list entry gives the Bhedaghat-Lametaghat site as about 25 km from Jabalpur [4]. We did not find a separate distance, road directions or a map pin for Lamheta alone, so we give the listing’s coordinates for the combined site. Plan to reach it together with Bhedaghat; see the Bhedaghat day trip.

Best time

Not documented for Lamheta. As a general river-trip rule, the cooler months and dry weather are easier, and the Narmada is high and fast in the monsoon. This is common sense, not a sourced finding.

Plan your visit

  1. Read a short account of the Lameta Formation before you go [1][2].
  2. Visit Bhedaghat first for the marble gorge and the falls, then ask locally where the Lameta exposures can be seen.
  3. Treat any fossil or rock as protected. Look, photograph, leave.

The geo park plan

In January 2022 GKToday reported that the Geological Survey of India had approved a geo park at Lamheta, on about five acres and costing Rs 35 crore. The article says it “will be built” [6]. In January 2024 The Hitavada reported a state meeting on a Lamhetaghat-Bhedaghat geo park of 12 hectares, with a museum using 3D models and touch tables, nature trails, a dinosaur replica and a food court [7]. It was still in planning. The two reports give different areas, and we found no evidence that it has opened.

History and stories

For the river and its ghats see the Narmada and Jabalpur and Bhedaghat’s Marble Rocks.

Good to know

  • A 2019 newspaper piece warns that construction along the Narmada bank is covering some geological sites at Lametaghat [5]. What you can see may be limited.
  • UNESCO tentative-list status is not World Heritage status. India submitted the site on 13 April 2021 [4].
  • No tickets, timings, temples or services are confirmed for Lamheta.

  • Whether the Lameta type section can be visited today, where exactly it is, and whether it is signed or protected. No official visitor source was found.
  • Status of the geo park: GKToday (2022) says about five acres and Rs 35 crore, The Hitavada (2024) says 12 hectares; neither confirms construction. Check with the Geological Survey of India or the district administration.
  • GKToday gives 1928 for the first dinosaur fossil find at Lamheta, while the Smithsonian-hosted paper and UNESCO give 1828 (Sleeman). 1828 is used here; GKToday's year looks like a typo.
  • Wikipedia's attractions list mentions a 'Beohari Temple Complex' under Lamheta. We found no other source and left it out.
  • Whether the Lameta Formation's naming spelling (Lameta vs Lamheta) has an official standard; both are used across sources.
