Overview

Between the fall of the Gond kingdom of Garha and the arrival of the British, Jabalpur passed through two Maratha hands: first the Marathas of Sagar, who acted for the Peshwa, and then the Bhonsles of Nagpur. The story is short in years but crowded with dates that sources do not quite agree on. This article lays out the sequence and marks the disagreements instead of smoothing them over [1][3].

Much of the detail comes through Wikipedia pages that rest on Chatterton’s The Story of Gondwana and the colonial gazetteers. We treat those as secondary and say so. The Jabalpur Cantonment Board’s history page gives an official outline [3].

Key moments

  • 1742: The Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao and Visaji Chandorkar of Sagar attack Garha. King Maharaj Shah is killed; his son is placed on the throne on condition of paying tribute [1][2].
  • 1780: Mudhoji Bhonsle of Nagpur defeats Narhar Shah and takes the Balaghat area [1].
  • 1781: The Sagar Marathas annex what remains of the kingdom, and Gond rule at Garha ends [1][2][3].
  • 1785, 1798 or 1799: The Narmada valley comes under the Bhonsles of Nagpur, depending on the source [2][3][4][6].
  • 1817-18: The Bhonsle ruler Appa Sahib is beaten at Sitabuldi, and the Narmada valley territories pass to the British. Jabalpur is occupied in 1818 [3][6][7].
  • 1820: The Agency of the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories is set up, with its agent at Jubbulpore [5].

People and events

The first blow came from outside. In 1742 the Peshwa and Visaji Chandorkar attacked Garha and killed Maharaj Shah. Wikipedia’s account of the Sagar Marathas puts the tribute at four lakh rupees a year, and the Mandla page says the Peshwa began collecting chauth [1][2][4]. Sagar itself had been fortified by Govind Pant Bundele in 1735, and Visaji was his son-in-law and successor [2].

The end came in two steps. In 1780 Mudhoji Bhonsle took the Balaghat side [1]. In 1781 Sagar annexed the rest, and the last Gond king, Narhar Shah, was sent to Khurai fort [1][2]. How he died is disputed: Stephen Fuchs, quoted on Wikipedia, says the Maratha general Moraji tortured him to death, while other sources only record exile [2].

The Bhonsle phase is the least tidy. The Cantonment Board says the Peshwa granted the Narmada valley to the Bhonsles in 1798 and that they held the district until 1818 [3]. The Sagar page says the Bhonsles captured these districts from the Sagar family in 1799, and the Nagpur page mentions a 1785 treaty that brought Mandla and the upper valley to them [2][6]. These may be different stages. We cannot settle them from the sources read.

Bhonsle rule ended in the war of 1817. After Appa Sahib’s defeat at Sitabuldi, the Narmada valley territories were ceded, and the southern part, including Jubbulpore, came from the Bhonsle while the north came from the Peshwa [5][6]. The Cantonment Board dates the occupation of Jabalpur to 1818 [3]; some pages say 1817.

Why it matters

This period moved Jabalpur out of a local Gond kingdom and into the wider Maratha system, then into the East India Company’s. The Company’s choice of Jabalpur as a headquarters in 1818 and as the seat of an agency in 1820 shaped the cantonment town that followed [3][5]. See British-era Jubbulpore.

What survives today

We found no confirmed Maratha-period monument in Jabalpur city. In Mandla, a Maratha-built wall and the 1818 assault on the fort are recorded [4], but that is a separate town. The main survivals in Jabalpur are in the records, not the streets.

Visiting

There is no dedicated site to visit in the city. For the Gond background, see Madan Mahal Fort and the Gond kingdom of Garha-Katanga. For what came next, see Revolt of 1857.

Myths and documented history

Documented: the 1742 attack, the 1781 annexation, the passing of the region to the Bhonsles, and the British takeover after the Third Anglo-Maratha War [1][2][3][5].

Disputed: the exact year of the Bhonsle transfer, whether the British came in 1817 or 1818, and Narhar Shah’s death.

Unknown: who governed Jabalpur for the Marathas, and what they built there.
