Overview

The Mughals reached the Jabalpur region in the 1560s, but they never ruled it the way they ruled the plains further north. Akbar’s general Asaf Khan broke the Gond kingdom of Garha in 1564. Three years later the kingdom was largely handed back to a Gond ruler, and for the next two centuries Garha-Mandla lived in the empire’s shadow as a half-independent neighbour [1][6].

A caution first. Almost everything documented here concerns the Garha kingdom and its rulers, not the city of Jabalpur itself. We found no Mughal governor, building or inscription in Jabalpur city, and we say so rather than fill the gap.

Key moments

  • 1561-62: Asaf Khan becomes governor of Kara Manikpur, the base from which he later turns on Garha [2].
  • 24 June 1564: Rani Durgavati dies at Narrai after her army is beaten [1]. See Rani Durgavati.
  • 1564: Asaf Khan captures the fort of Chauragarh and takes a large haul, including about a thousand elephants [2].
  • 1565: Asaf Khan quarrels with Akbar over the spoils, flees, and is later pardoned [2].
  • 1567: Akbar restores the kingdom to Chandra Shah, who gives up ten forts. They are added to the Mughal province of Malwa [1].
  • 1634: After the Orchha chief Jhujhar Singh kills King Prem Narain, Mughal help puts Hriday Shah on the throne [4][5].

People and events

Asaf Khan acted with Akbar’s permission, but the campaign was also a private venture. Having served as governor of Kara Manikpur and attacked a neighbouring raja, he marched on Garha, defeated its army and took Chauragarh [1][2]. The elephants show how the story went wrong. The Encyclopaedia Iranica says he sent only 200 to the emperor and kept the rest, which made Akbar suspicious and led to his flight in 1565 [2]. The Wikipedia page on the conquest gives the same split of the animals but different details of his flight, so the exact route is not settled [1].

The settlement of 1567 was a compromise. Chandra Shah accepted Mughal overlordship, ten forts passed to the empire, and the rest of the kingdom stayed under Gond rulers [1][4]. The Ain-i-Akbari, as summarised on Wikipedia, lists Garha Mandla as one of the twelve sarkars of Malwa Subah, with 57 parganas in the page’s table, which shows the area was at least counted on paper [3].

After that the contact is occasional. When Jhujhar Singh of Orchha killed Prem Narain, the Mughals helped Hriday Shah retake the kingdom. He kept friendly ties with the court and spent time in Delhi [4][5]. Later Gond rulers, according to the same page, invited Aurangzeb and the Marathas to help them and gave away land and revenue to buy off enemies [5].

Why it matters

The conquest ended Garha’s independence and tied the kingdom, on paper at least, to a large empire. Yet the Jabalpur Cantonment Board describes Mughal supremacy over the region as nominal, and the district administration speaks only of “intermittent” Mughal and Maratha rule shaping a mixed culture [6][7]. Both statements are general; neither gives dates or names.

What survives today

No Mughal monument in Jabalpur city was found in the sources we could read. What survives is mostly the memory of Rani Durgavati, the Gond hill forts such as Madan Mahal, and the documents written about the campaign, notably Abul Fazl’s Akbarnama and Ain-i-Akbari.

Visiting

There is no Mughal site to visit in the city. To follow the period on the ground, see the Gond kingdom of Garha-Katanga and the places linked from the Rani Durgavati article.

Myths and documented history

Documented: Asaf Khan’s invasion in 1564, Durgavati’s death, the elephants and Asaf Khan’s falling-out, the 1567 settlement, and the 1634 intervention [1][2][4].

Loosely stated: some pages make it sound as if Akbar led the army himself. The sources that name the commander say Asaf Khan did [1][2].

Unknown: how far Mughal officials actually reached into Jabalpur, whether the city had any imperial post, and when Mughal claims lapsed.
