Overview

Bargi Dam blocks the Narmada about 30 km from Jabalpur [4]. It was one of the first of roughly thirty major dams planned on the river in Madhya Pradesh to be completed [1]. Its reservoir, some 75 km long, supplies canals for irrigation and turns turbines for electricity [1]. The project is associated with the name of Rani Avantibai Lodhi through the Rani Avantibai Lodhi Sagar Project [1].

The dam also flooded a large stretch of the upper Narmada valley. The people who lived there paid a heavy price, and their struggle for rehabilitation is part of the dam’s history [3].

Key moments

  • 1974 or 1975: Construction begins. Wikipedia, citing Central Water Commission data, gives 1975; Structurae gives 1974 [1][2].
  • 1988: The dam opens [1].
  • 1990: The reservoir reaches full capacity, according to Structurae [2].
  • 1994: Fishing rights in the reservoir are handed to cooperatives of displaced people [3].
  • July–September 1996: Oustees hold a satyagraha as the water rises; Medha Patkar is arrested and later released after the High Court at Jabalpur finds her detention illegal. The state agrees to keep the water at 418 m until rehabilitation is complete [3].

People and events

The engineering. Bargi is a gravity dam 69.8 m high and 5,357 m long, with an ogee spillway and 21 radial gates. The reservoir holds about 3,920 million cubic metres and covers almost 268 km². Its power station has 105 MW of installed capacity [1]. It is owned by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and operated by the Narmada Valley Development Department and the state Water Resources Department [1].

The displaced. Down To Earth reported in 1996 that residents of 162 villages in Seoni, Mandla and Jabalpur districts were affected and that more than one lakh people had been displaced. Six years after the land went under, many still awaited rehabilitation [3]. Fishing cooperatives, 54 of them by 1996, gave some income, but the magazine noted that they reached only a fraction of those who had lost land [3]. Displaced families asked that the reservoir be kept at 418 m to save about 5,000 hectares they still farmed [3].

We give these 1996 figures as reported at that time. They may not reflect what happened later.

Why it matters

Bargi shows both sides of the Narmada valley projects. It brought water and power to the region, and it was an early test of what large dams on the Narmada would mean for the people living along the river [1][3]. The protests here came before the better-known Sardar Sarovar campaign reached its peak, and involved some of the same activists [3].

What survives today

The dam and reservoir are in use. The reservoir has become a picnic and boating spot for Jabalpur [4]. Communities around the reservoir continue to fish it [3].

Visiting

The dam is about 30 km from the city by road, and the route passes near Rani Durgavati’s samadhi [4]. Boating and gardens are available, but we have not listed timings or fees because we found no official source for them. Respect any restricted areas near the dam structure.

Myths and documented history

Documented: the dam’s dimensions, purpose, and the late-1970s to late-1980s construction period [1][2]; the displacement and the 1996 protest as reported at the time [3].

Uncertain: the exact start and finish years, which differ between sources [1][2]; whether “Rani Avantibai Lodhi Sagar” is the official name of the dam or of one irrigation scheme [1].

Rani Avantibai Lodhi Sagar is simply another name for the Bargi reservoir.
The name is widely used for the dam project, but the CWC-based Wikipedia entry lists it as one of the irrigation projects run from the dam. Check the official NVDA naming.
