Why try it

Poha with jalebi sounds like an odd pair until you taste it. The poha is salty and soft, the jalebi is sweet and crisp, and you eat them in alternating bites. Outlook Traveller describes the Indore version as a mix of sweet, spicy and crunchy, with sev or farsan on top [2]. It is a breakfast dish, not a dessert, and sources across Madhya Pradesh treat it that way [2][4][6].

What it is

Poha is flattened rice. Outlook Traveller’s guide to Madhya Pradesh food calls it a breakfast staple of Maharashtrian origin, made with onion, potato and peanuts and often served with jalebi [4]. MP Tourism’s Mahakoshal page describes a version tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves, with onion and turmeric, topped with coriander, sev and lemon [5]. Incredible India says Indori poha is lighter, with less oil and spice, topped with sev, onion, coriander and lime, and usually paired with hot jalebi [3].

Jalebi is a spiral of fried batter soaked in sugar syrup. Incredible India adds that in winter, jalebis are also dunked in thickened milk outside Indore sweet shops [3]. That is a separate habit, doodh-jalebi, not the poha pairing.

Across the state

The tradition is not one city’s property. The Mandsaur district website lists poha jalebi among its local dishes and links it to Malwa traditions, often eaten with morning tea [6]. Indore gets most of the attention in food writing, and Outlook calls poha-jalebi one of the city’s most popular breakfast items [2]. Outlook’s state-level guide treats it as a staple of Madhya Pradesh in general and names no town of origin [4].

In Jabalpur

The documentation for Jabalpur is thin, and it is better to say so. In a 2017 Outlook Traveller piece on spending a day in the city, the writer calls poha-jalebi a staple of Madhya Pradesh and says she ordered it for breakfast with a spiral sweet from Kesarwani Sweets [1]. The article gives no address and no opening hours, and it does not say whether this is a local custom of Jabalpur or simply the state’s habit meeting a traveller. MP Tourism also lists poha among the vegetarian specialities of the Mahakoshal region, which includes Jabalpur [5].

We have not found a district, news or book source that describes how Jabalpur residents eat poha-jalebi, so we do not claim that it has a Jabalpur style. If you are in the city, treat it as a regional breakfast you can reasonably expect to find.

Plan your morning

  • Walk to a sweet shop or breakfast stall in the morning and look for poha and fresh jalebi on the same counter. Fresh, hot jalebi is the point [3].
  • Pair it with tea; the Mandsaur page notes the pairing is often taken with morning tea [6].
  • If you want something more local to Jabalpur, see Jabalpur Sweets for khoya jalebi, which is a different, darker sweet.

Good to know

  • Poha is vegetarian, but the toppings and the oil used differ by vendor. Ask if you have dietary needs.
  • It is sweet and fried, so check with your doctor first if you manage diabetes.
  • Hours and prices are not listed here because no reliable source gives them.
