What the sources say

Jabalpur’s sweet-making is not as widely written about as its river and marble, so this page keeps to what sources support. One sweet, the khoya jalebi, appears again and again. Others come from lists of local sweets and from MP Tourism’s description of Mahakoshal cuisine, which names khoya (mawa) as a staple ingredient of the region [4].

Khoya jalebi

Outlook Traveller calls khoya jalebi a Jabalpur speciality. In its description the batter is made of khoya and arrowroot, and the result is dark and spongy, closer to a gulab jamun than to an ordinary jalebi [1]. The magazine places it at Badkul Sweets, in Sarafa Bazaar near Kamania Gate, and credits it to Harprasad Badkul in 1889 [1]. A second Outlook piece calls it “the famous khoya jalebi” and says the shop has stood at the same spot since 1889 [9].

Patrika’s 2017 report names the same family across generations and says the jalebi is made in desi ghee and keeps for eight days [2]. It also says the jalebi was once sold at the railway station for a few months, then stopped [2]. Swiggy’s blog describes khoya jalebi as often flavoured with saffron and served with rabdi [8].

The 1889 date is repeated by Wikipedia: its Jalebi article credits the khoya jalebi to Harprasad Badkul in 1889 and cites Outlook, a jabalpur.nic.in page and Patrika [6], and its Jabalpur page says he invented it at his shop, Badkul Halwai [3]. We treat it as a tradition, attributed to the family, until a contemporary or district record is read. The Wikivoyage entry also lists small night vendors near Fuhara selling lassi, rabri and khoya jalebi [7].

Mawa and milk sweets

MP Tourism lists several sweets under Mahakoshal cuisine [4]:

  • Mawa bati: khoya balls stuffed with dry fruit, fried and soaked in saffron and cardamom syrup, called “a festive favourite across the state”.
  • Khoprapak: fresh coconut cooked with milk, sugar and cardamom, set into squares.
  • Malpua: fennel-flavoured pancakes soaked in syrup and often served with rabri.

Outlook Traveller’s state guide also names khopra pak, malpua, shrikhand and mawa bati as Madhya Pradesh desserts [5]. Wikipedia’s Jabalpur page lists doodh ka halwa, kalakand, imarti and makkhanvada alongside these [3]; we flag that list as lightly sourced. Swiggy’s blog calls malpua a winter and festive treat and khopra pak a festival sweet [8]. None of these sources claims that any of these sweets began in Jabalpur.

Rabri with jalebi

Wikipedia notes that in North India jalebi is eaten with curd or rabri [6], and Jabalpur sources pair khoya jalebi and rabri on the night-snack list [7][8].

Chikki

Outlook’s writer bought a large block of rajgira (amaranth) chikki from a pushcart in Sarafa Bazaar after dark [9]. Rajgira is also used in fasting food; see Navratri Vrat Food.

Plan your sweet stop

  1. Go to the old city near Kamania Gate and Sarafa. Outlook gives the address as Sarafa Bazaar, Kamania Gate [1].
  2. Ask for khoya jalebi and, if you wish, rabri, as Wikivoyage lists them together [7].
  3. Combine it with an evening walk; see Street Food: Sarafa and the Old Markets.

Good to know

  • We name Badkul only because Outlook, Patrika and Wikipedia identify it with khoya jalebi. This is not a ranking and says nothing about other shops.
  • Prices and hours are not given because no reliable source lists them.
  • For the research notes on the origin claim, see Jabalpur’s food heritage.
