Overview

Over about two thousand years the place we call Jabalpur has had several names. Some of them belonged to different settlements that stood close together: an ancient capital, a medieval fort town and a colonial cantonment. Going through them one by one shows how the centre of power moved.

Key moments

  • Tripuri. This was the ancient capital at today’s Tewar village. It was probably named for “three cities”. Copper coins of the Tripuri city-state carry the legend Tirpuri and are dated to around the 3rd–2nd century BCE. In the 11th century the scholar al-Biruni wrote the name as Tiori. The village name Tewar is thought to come from a corrupted form of Tripura [1].
  • Garha. This was the early seat of the Gond kings, whose state is called Garha or Garha-Mandla. Garha is now a neighbourhood of the city [2].
  • Jubbulpore. This is how the British wrote the name after they took the town in 1818 [3][7]. Families in British India Society records show many other spellings as well, including Jubbalpore, Jubbelpore, Jabbalpore and Juppulpore [4].
  • Jabalpur. This spelling follows Hindi pronunciation. Wikipedia says it was adopted in 1947, but that line has no citation [5]. We have not found the notification.
  • “Jabalipuram”. In 2006 the municipal corporation proposed this rename [6]. It is sometimes misreported as the year “Jubbulpore became Jabalpur”.

People and events

The names follow the political centre:

  • The Kalachuris ruled from Tripuri [1].
  • The Gonds built up Garha [2].
  • The British made Jubbulpore the headquarters of the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, and later a major town of the Central Provinces [3].

Why it matters

Old records use the old names, so anyone searching archives, maps or family histories needs all of them. Searching for “Jubbulpore” brings up most material from before 1947.

What survives today

  • Tewar village still keeps a form of the Tripuri name.
  • Garha is a city locality.
  • “Jubbulpore” lives on in old maps and regimental and railway records, and on FIBIS-type genealogical sites [4].

Myths and documented history

  • Myth: the 2006 rename. The claim that Jubbulpore officially became Jabalpur in 2006 is unsupported. That year’s resolution was about “Jabalipuram” [6].
  • Uncertain: the 1947 date. The 1947 respelling is plausible, but it still needs a primary source.
  • Myth: Tripuri as the city’s old name. Tripuri was the region’s ancient capital, not an earlier name for the present city.

  • Jubbulpore।
