Overview

Nobody knows for certain how Jabalpur got its name. Several explanations are in circulation, and each has supporters. None of them yet rests on a dated document showing the name being coined. This article sets out each theory, says who puts it forward, and separates what is documented from what is believed.

Even the official sources are careful here. The district administration’s history page says nothing about the name [4]. The Cantonment Board says the name is “believed” to come from sage Jabali and calls him a mythological figure [1].

Key moments

  • Ancient period: the regional capital is Tripuri at today’s Tewar. Coins carry the name in the Prakrit form “Tirpuri” [5].
  • 1818: the British occupy the town and spell it “Jubbulpore” in their records [1][4].
  • December 2006: the municipal corporation passes a resolution to rename the city “Jabalipuram” after sage Jabali [2].

The theories, one by one

1. Sage Jabali

This is the best-known explanation. In this version a sage named Jabali did penance on the banks of the Narmada, and the town took its name from him: Jabali-pur, “Jabali’s town”. The Jabalpur Cantonment Board repeats this view [1]. In 2006 councillors from both major parties backed renaming the city Jabalipuram on the same basis [2].

Weakness: no inscription, land grant or early text has been cited that places a sage Jabali here. A Jabali appears in the Ramayana tradition, but that does not show that this town is named after him. Historian Arvind Pal said in 2006 that it is not known where or when Jabali lived [2].

2. Arabic/Persian “jabal” (hill, rock)

In Arabic, jabal means a mountain or hill. Persian administrative language borrowed the word. On this theory, “Jabalpur” means something like “town of rocks or hills”. That would suit a place full of granite outcrops such as the Balancing Rock and the Madan Mahal ridge. Arvind Pal argued for this origin and called the Jabalipuram rename absurd for that reason [2]. Tourism and guidebook writers repeat it too [3].

Weakness: the theory is plausible, but nobody has shown when a Persian-speaking administration might have given the name, or that it did.

3. “Jauli pattala”

One theory says the name comes from Jauli, a sub-division (pattala) said to appear in Kalachuri inscriptions. On Wikipedia this claim carries no citation [3]. We treat it as unsupported until someone checks it against the published corpus of Kalachuri inscriptions.

4. Tripuri and Tripurasura

This is often mixed up with the name question. Tripuri (“three cities”) was the ancient capital at Tewar, near Jabalpur. Puranic legend ties it to the three cities of the demon Tripurasura, which Shiva destroyed [5]. Tripuri is an older name for the region’s capital. It does not explain the word “Jabalpur”.

People and events

  • Jabali: a sage of tradition. His historical existence is not established [1][2].
  • Arvind Pal: a Jabalpur historian quoted in 2006 in favour of the “jabal” origin [2].
  • The 2006 resolution: passed by the municipal corporation and sent to the state government [2]. We have not found a record of it being ratified.

Why it matters

Arguments over a name are also arguments about identity. One theory gives the city a Sanskrit, sacred origin. The other points to a Persian-era layer of history. Both are part of Jabalpur’s mixed past, and the evidence does not yet decide between them.

What survives today

The name itself survives, along with the colonial spelling Jubbulpore in old maps and records (see Names of Jabalpur). So does the ancient mound of Tripuri at Tewar.
