Why go
Much of Jabalpur’s early past survives in carved stone rather than standing buildings. The Rani Durgavati Museum is where a lot of that stone ended up, so it is a good stop if you want to see what the region’s temples and sculptors produced. It is dedicated to the Gond queen Rani Durgavati [1][2].
It is also a quiet place. In 2022 The Hitavada reported only 10 to 12 visitors a day, mostly college students, down from large winter crowds in 2019 [1]. If you like museums you can look slowly.
What you will see
According to The Hitavada, the collection includes sculptures of Hindu and Jain deities (the paper dates them from the 2nd to the 18th century), rare coins, and letters written by Mahatma Gandhi [1]. It also names a 10th-century red stone sculpture from Tripuri, a sandstone Durga, a 10th-century sandstone Saraswati, and a wild boar sculpture at the entrance [1]. Wikipedia describes the holdings as sculptures, inscriptions and prehistoric relics [2], and the attractions list adds ancient relics and Gandhi-related items [3].
