Why go
Kanha is one of the best-known tiger reserves in central India, set in the Maikal hills in Mandla and Balaghat districts [6]. Jabalpur is a convenient starting point because Incredible India lists the city as the base for the park [1]. But be honest with yourself about distance: this is a long road trip, not an evening out like Gwarighat.
Distance and route
The official tourism page prints two figures for the distance from Jabalpur, 125 km and about 137 km [1]. A travel site that walks the route gives 160 km, about 3.5 hours, to the Khatia gate, going via Mandla and then Mocha [5]. It puts Sarhi at 170 km and Mukki at 190 km, both about 4 hours. None of these is a single official road distance, so treat all of them as approximate and check a live map on the day.
Editorial advice: with driving time like this, a same-day return plus a safari is tiring. Most visitors would do better with one night near the gate.
Gates and zones
Incredible India says jeep safaris run in the core zones (Kanha, Kisli, Mukki, Sarhi) and in buffer zones (Khatia, Khapa, Sijora, and the Phen sanctuary) [1]. It adds that the Khatia (Kisli) and Sarhi gates are easiest to reach from Jabalpur, while Mukki suits travellers coming from Nagpur or Raipur [1]. The names are confusing: MP Tourism lists Khatia as a buffer zone [3], and the booking portal decides which gate and zone your permit is for. Read your permit carefully before you drive.
When the park is open
Incredible India describes the park as open from mid-October to the end of June, closing for the monsoon [1]. MP Tourism says the core zones shut for a three-month breeding season from late June, and gives no exact dates [3]. In 2024, Outlook Traveller reported core zones of six reserves, Kanha among them, closed until 1 October [4]. The buffer zones, including Khatia, Khapa and Sijhora at Kanha, are described as open for monsoon safaris [3].
Check the official site for the dates that apply this year. The booking portal also shows revised entry and exit times for safari dates from 1 October 2026, which vary by month [2].
Best time
December to February is described as the most pleasant for game drives, while April to June is hot but often gives the best tiger sightings, because animals gather near shrinking water [1]. Sightings are never guaranteed.
How safari booking works
Safaris are booked online through the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department portal, forest.mponline.gov.in [2]. MP Tourism says bookings open on a rolling 120-day window, released each day at 11:00 AM [3]. Only the Park Entry Permit is paid online. The jeep hire and the local guide fee are paid at the gate in cash or by local QR [3]. The ID details you enter must match the ID you carry, or entry is denied [3]. The portal lists customer care for problems [2]. We do not describe individual steps or fees, because they change; follow the portal.
What to carry
From the sources: your matching ID and booking printout or ticket [3], and some cash for the gate payments [3]. From common sense: water, a warm layer for cold early mornings in winter, sun protection in summer, muted clothing, and binoculars.
Plan your visit
A workable sequence, as editorial advice only: book the permit first, leave Jabalpur the day before, stay close to your gate, do the morning safari, and drive back after lunch. Rest the day after.
