Why go

Gwarighat is where Jabalpur meets the Narmada most directly. In the evening the Maa Narmada temple holds an aarti for the river, and people gather on the steps to watch [1][2][7]. Several faiths share the bank: besides the temple there is a gurdwara, a Jain temple and a Sai Baba temple and ashram [1]. For a visitor it is the easiest way to see how the river is part of daily life here.

What you will see and do

According to Curly Tales, the aarti begins when night falls and runs about 30 to 35 minutes. Life-size diyas are lit along the ghat, and the aarti is sung to the river with incense, instruments and hymns [3]. The steps along the water are used for seating [3]. MP Tourism adds that after the aarti visitors float diyas in the river [2].

A visitor who went in January 2015 described large crowds that thin out slowly after the aarti, flowers and lamps, and a brightly lit gurdwara with a tall flagpole and a Sikh history museum in its basement [4]. He also wrote that the gurdwara offers langar round the clock. That is a ten-year-old account, so treat it as a lead to check, not a fact to plan around.

Getting there

Curly Tales puts Gwarighat about 9 km from Jabalpur Junction and 14 km from the bus stand [3]. MP Tourism lists it at 10 km from Jabalpur [2]. Jabalpur’s Dumna Airport is about 20 km from the city [7]. Take a taxi or auto from the station. The 2015 visitor recommended the main city roads over a village route via Tilhari, which he found unlit and deserted in the evening [4].

Best time

Evening. Sources do not agree on a clock time: one says the aarti starts at nightfall [3], another recorded about 7 to 8 pm in 2015 [4]. Sunset changes through the year, so ask at the ghat. The ghat is also very crowded on Narmada Jayanti, which is marked with a procession, bhajans and an evening Maha Aarti [5][6], and during the Kartik fair [1].

Plan your visit

  1. Reach the ghat before dusk and walk down to the water in daylight.
  2. Find a place on the steps. Look at the temple, then the gurdwara and the other shrines along the bank.
  3. Stay for the whole aarti. Photograph only what feels respectful, and avoid the flash.
  4. Afterwards float a diya if you wish, and walk along the bank while the crowd leaves.
  5. Leave by a lit main road.

Eat and stay nearby

We found no sourced listing of restaurants or hotels at Gwarighat. For where to eat in the city, see the Jabalpur food guide.

History and stories

The ghat’s origin and the start of the daily aarti are not documented in anything we could open. A gurdwara tradition says Guru Nanak came here; it is a belief, with no primary source found. The fuller story is in Gwarighat: Jabalpur’s evening aarti on the Narmada.

Good to know

  • Boats: decorated boats wait on the bank [3]. The 2015 visitor was warned of a strong current and advised against night rides [4]. Since a cruise boat accident at Bargi on 30 April 2026, boat safety is in the news; ask about life jackets and weather before boarding. See Bargi Dam.
  • Etiquette: dress modestly, cover your head in the gurdwara, keep away from cremation areas, and keep soap and polythene out of the river, as devotees were asked in 2025 [1][6].
  • Tradition: Uma Ghat nearby has a Narmada Sidh Kund that devotees believe cures ailments. That is faith, not a verified claim [1].
  • Not found: official aarti timetable, boat fares, parking.
